Adding Video to your LinkedIn Profile is a tool many are unfamiliar with, however it can be a powerful way to differentiate yourself from the crowd.
View my profile for videos on this topic. But after receiving so many questions on this topic, I figured I would lay out the steps here.
You can add video through Google presentation or SlideShare applications on LinkedIn. This article will focus on SlideShare.
Step 1. Create a SlideShare account
Step 2. Upload a blank presentation to SlideShare
Step 3. Edit your SlideShare presentation
Step 4. Click on YouTube tab at top of edit page
Step 5. Copy URL of your YouTube video
Step 6. Paste URL of YouTube Video on SlideShare YouTube Edit page
Step 7. Make sure the box next to the box you paste the URL shows “Before Slide 1”
Step 8. Save all changes
Step 9. Go into LinkedIn applications and add your Slideshare application to your profile
Step 10. Sync your SlideShare Account with LinkedIn
Step 11. In the application within LinkedIn, click on “Your Slidespace” tab
Step 12. Click on “Your Applications Settings”
Step 13. Under the “Profile Settings” category, make sure to select “Show complete presentation in player” and click save at the bottom of the page.
Step 14. Check out your profile and your new instant playing video!

I just watched your video. Nicely done. I’ll have to consider this option. Thanks for the idea, Nate!
Excellent post. Just a quick question. Is it normal that the video on my profil starts automatically before I even click on play?
Here is my profil. http://www.linkedin.com/myprofile?trk=hb_tab_pro
Thanks
I did everything as listed, but there is no YouTube tab that comes up when I hit edit. It only allows me to change the Title and description of the presentation.
When you click on the edit tab for the presentation, you should see 4 tabs across the top. the one on the far right should be Youtube. Let me know if it’s not there anymore. should be though.
Nate – thanks for the detailed explanation!
A small suggestion: because, as Fred pointed out, LinkedIn users don’t expect to hear anything on your profile, I wouldn’t put the YouTube slide before the first slide but AFTER the first slide. You can see an example here: http://il.linkedin.com/pub/raffi-preter/21/729/708
Viewers are advised there’s a video, they see the YouTube logo, and you can even show them where to click to move to slide 2. This will enable viewers to know they’re about to view a video, adjust the volume level, and – most important – not be surprised. Before making this change I watched people viewing this profile, and some of them jumped and wanted to close that tab or go back – not what you want your readers to do…
Just my $0.02 adding to Nate’s great walkthrough!
Hi Nate,
I’ve tried this today (May 22, 2012) and did not see the 4 tabs you mentioned. I’m not sure how hold this post is, but the YouTube tab isn’t there.
Any other suggestions on how to do this?
Hi Lauren,
Some new developments I need to tell you about. You can no longer add video to LinkedIn via Slideshare without first upgrading to Slidshare Pro. This may be why you are having some issues. Slideshare Pro can cost as little as $19/month.
[...] including video to your individual profile pages. Previously users needed to do this through a Google Presentation or a Slideshare account which frequently didn’t work properly and was difficult to set up.So I’m excited to [...]
